Soumitra Chatterjee- Legend!

Soumitra Chatterjee is a multi facet personality of Bengali Cinema a playwright, Actor, Director passed away recently.

His association with Master of World Cinema Satyajit Ray  important milestone happened in Indian Film history.

He acted nearly 14 films made by Ray.

Soumitra Chatterjee completed his graduation in Bengali Literature from the City College, Kolkata with honors in Bengali literature. While still a student, he learned acting under noted actor-director of Bengali theatre Ahindra Choudhury.

Chatterjee was unlike any other actor for the craft and the consistency with which he worked for 62 years.
Dadasaheb Phalke awardee, Padma Bhushan, recipient of National Awards for his films and global recognition for his extraordinary career of 62 years, including the Legion d’honneur, is an icon,He was first Indian film personality to Receive Highest Honor from French Government.
His directorial effort “Stree Ki Patra”, a telefilm based on Rabindranath Tagore’s “Streer Patra” released in 1986
was appreciated by critics.
Known to be a perfectionist, Chatterjee in his later years worked with Goutam Ghose, Aparna Sen and Rituparno Ghosh.
He kept going even in his 80s — in the National Award film “Mayurakshi” (2017), “Bela Sheshe” (2015) and “Posto” (2017). Standouts in his theatre career include his rendition of Shakespeare’s King Lear in Suman Mukhopadhyay’s play that earned him accolades both nationally and globally. He also wrote over 15 plays and directed more than 30 stage productions.
Soumitra Chatterjee who performed more than 300 films with quality is a great inspiration and message to generations to come.
