My mother was a hairdresser in the industry. I once accompanied her to <strong>Vadapalani Murugan Temple<\/strong>, which led to a visit to <strong>AVM Studios<\/strong>,\u00a0 where i was choosen by AVM to appear\u00a0 as a baby in Paava Manippu with Chevalier Shivaji Ganesan\u00a0 and that turned into an acting offer that continued\u00a0 in a few films as a Baby and child artist, even acted alongside Makkal Thilagam\u00a0 <strong>MGR<\/strong>. But I left acting early to focus on studies and sports, particularly <strong>kabaddi<\/strong>. I started out with the <strong>Mitchell camera<\/strong>, which was standard in studio productions then. It was bulky, required precision, and taught me discipline. Loading film, writing camera reports, maintaining lenses\u2014those assistant days gave me the backbone of my career.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>You were mentored by some big names. How did that shape you?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Ravindhar:<\/strong> Immensely. I worked under <strong>Marcus Bartley<\/strong>, who shaped my understanding of light and visual mood. <strong>Rajaram<\/strong> also mentored me. Later, I assisted <strong>Amirtham sir<\/strong> on <em>Vandikaran Magal<\/em>. Then I moved into <strong>Malayalam cinema<\/strong>, working under <strong>Ramachandra Menon,KB Dhayalan<\/strong> and spending nearly a decade on director <strong>Baby sir\u2019s<\/strong> films. Lenin<\/strong> sir. It was my first time using <strong>video cameras<\/strong>. I had to quickly adapt to <strong>high-band formats<\/strong>. Lighting remained my strength, and I focused on bringing cinematic aesthetics into the television space.<\/p>\n<p>One unforgettable memory: <strong>Balu Mahendra sir<\/strong> called me when he was planning to shoot <em>Kadhai Neram<\/em> for TV. He initially wanted to shoot in Film,but budget constraint led him to think over video format,regarding he\u00a0 wanted to know how he could bring his <strong>film-like visuals into tape-based formats<\/strong>. It was a huge moment for me\u2014to spend a day with him to have a conversation on the subject.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Tell us about your collaboration with K. Balachander sir.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I was brought into <strong>Minbimbangal<\/strong> by <strong>Mr. Kailasam<\/strong>. We used a <strong>Super 16 camera<\/strong>\u2014which I had earlier used for a short film I directed. During a shoot in <strong>Kodaikanal<\/strong>, KB sir insisted on having a <strong>monitor<\/strong> on set, even though <strong>external monitoring wasn\u2019t available for Super 16<\/strong> then. He was already comfortable directing with monitors from his video serials. So, we arranged for one to be brought from Bombay! After years of assisting and television work, it was my first feature film as DoP. It was a full-length project shot nearly 120 days with good production values and gave me complete creative responsibility. What do you recall?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Chinna Thambi<\/em> was visually poetic. It was a massive success\u2014<strong>the film ran for 365 days<\/strong>, a true rarity today. Back then, several of the films I worked on ran for over <strong>100 days<\/strong>, which was a mark of box office and public appreciation. Today\u2019s business model is different\u2014faster, more digital, with shorter theatrical runs. But that era gave us time to craft visuals that stayed in people\u2019s minds.<\/p>\n<p>The songs in <em>Chinna Thambi<\/em> were treated like poetry\u2014with movement, travel, natural light, and emotional softness. In contrast, <em>Velai Kidaichuduchu<\/em> had a more urban and intense tone. I had <strong>accidentally overexposed a key scene<\/strong>. There was no time to reshoot. At <strong>Gemini Lab<\/strong>, I worked with <strong>colorist Narayanan<\/strong>\u00a0to <strong>pull-process the film<\/strong>, adjusting development to save the footage. It came out surprisingly well. That\u2019s when my assistantship and lab knowledge paid off. Experience is your best insurance in this field.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u00a0How did your second innings in cinema happen?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I returned to feature films by shooting a project for <strong>TK Bose<\/strong>, followed by the <strong>launch film of Dhusyanth<\/strong> (from Shivaji Productions). That period reestablished me in cinema. How did that come about?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Director <strong>Suseenthiran<\/strong> insisted I play a cop in <em>Paayum Puli<\/em>. I hesitated at first, but it worked. After that, I received more offers and did a few character roles. My work in <strong>advertising<\/strong> also expanded with digital formats. I owe a lot to <strong>Amirtham sir<\/strong>, who encouraged me when he headed the <strong>Government Film Institute<\/strong>. He constantly pushed me to explore new avenues.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u00a0Tell us about your experience as a National Award jury member.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In <strong>2022<\/strong>, I was honored to be part of the <strong>National Film Awards jury<\/strong>. I watched over <strong>90 films<\/strong>, especially from Tamil and Malayalam. It was a great responsibility and a deeply enriching experience\u2014to witness the country\u2019s cinematic diversity from a judging seat.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u00a0You were also involved in film distribution?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Yes, with a few friends, I was part of releasing about <strong>60 Tamil films in Karnataka<\/strong>. Distribution showed me the business side of cinema\u2014how a film reaches people, the market, and audience dynamics. Now, I\u2019m exploring <strong>AI tools<\/strong> and visual experiments. I want to direct a feature film soon. New ideas excite me, and I believe <strong>learning must never stop<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What\u2019s your core philosophy as a cinematographer?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Whether film or digital, my mantra is <strong>discipline and intention<\/strong>. Light with purpose. Frame with understanding. Respect the story, and the technology will serve you. Preparation, even today, is key. I visualize before I touch the camera.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What would you like to share with today\u2019s generation of cinematographers?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Go back to the basics. Assist good technicians. Watch how light behaves on real skin, not just sensors. Practice with or without equipment. A good frame isn\u2019t about gear\u2014it\u2019s about clarity and thought.
