Dadasaheb Phalke award-winning film director Mrinal Sen passed away on Sunday, He was aged 95.
He was very supportive for Independent films made in Tamil during 1970’s.
Mrinal Sen was among the filmmakers who heralded a New Wave in Indian cinema.
He made his directorial debut with Raat Bhore in 1955 and is known for making films that focussed on socio-political issues. A recipient of 12 international film awards, Mrinal Sen was also a member of the Indian People’s Theatre Association.
During his career, he also won awards from the prestigious Venice Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival, Montreal World Film Festival, Moscow International Film Festival and many others.
Sen directed Neel Akasher Neechey, the first film that was banned in independent India.
Sen through his films mirrored social menace inflicted by class differences.
