Hemant Chaturvedi: A Cinematographer’s Journey

Hemant Chaturvedi, an acclaimed Indian cinematographer, embarked on his cinematic odyssey with the 2002 film “Company,” which garnered him widespread critical praise. Known for his ability to capture the gritty realism of the crime world, Chaturvedi’s frames resonate with authenticity, as noted by The Hindu.

Transitioning from television to the silver screen, Chaturvedi’s journey was marked by determination and unwavering passion for his craft. Despite initial challenges, including a lack of experience with film cameras, he seized the opportunity to work on “Company” with confidence, demonstrating his innate talent and adaptability.

Chaturvedi’s collaboration with renowned filmmakers such as Vishal Bhardwaj and Aparna Sen further solidified his reputation in the industry. His notable works include “Maqbool” (2002) and “15 Park Avenue” (2005), showcasing his versatility and artistic vision.

Hemant Chaturvedi,  has also embarked on a monumental endeavor to document India’s vanishing single-screen cinemas. Spanning 21,000 miles and encompassing 800 towns, his photographic journey captures the essence of these architectural and cultural landmarks before they succumb to the onslaught of multiplexes and malls.

After a prolific career spanning 12 feature films, Chaturvedi transitioned to documentary filmmaking with “Chhayaankan” (2021). This documentary, featuring veteran Indian cinematographers, pays homage to the unsung heroes behind the lens, including those who once overlooked Chaturvedi’s potential.

“Chhayaankan”, a film that encapsulates the journeys, the artistry, and the profound impact of 14 distinguished Cinematographers who have shaped the landscape of Indian Cinema.
