SICA Tribute to Dedo Weigert

A Visionary Who Illuminated the World of Cinematography
Southern Indian Cinematographers’ Association (SICA) mourns the passing of Dedo Weigert, the legendary cinematographer, inventor, and founder of the iconic Dedolight system. A true visionary from Munich, Germany, Dedo transformed the global filmmaking landscape by redefining what precision lighting could achieve.
Guided by the instincts of a practicing cinematographer, his innovations—especially the revolutionary dual-lens Dedolight system—brought unmatched control, efficiency, and creative freedom to filmmakers. His contribution was so profound that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honored him with multiple Scientific & Engineering Oscars, cementing his place among the greatest technical minds in cinema history.

SICA proudly remembers the time Dedo Weigert shared his wisdom with our community during a special masterclass in Chennai, conducted with Lotus Cine Equipments. The session, warmly received by Former SICA President P.C. Sreeram and General Secretary B. Kannan, stands as a cherished moment in our association’s history. National Award winner P.C. Sreeram also recalled using Dedo lights more than a decade ago—an enduring testimony to their brilliance and the timelessness of Dedo’s engineering genius.

Today, as the global cinematography fraternity bids farewell to a pioneer, SICA salutes a man whose ideas reshaped the very language of light.
His legacy will continue to shine through every frame illuminated by his remarkable inventions and through the learning he generously shared with artists around the world.

SICA pays heartfelt homage to Dedo Weigert —
a master of light, a mentor, and an eternal guiding force for cinematographers everywhere.
