Apple 8k 3D camera!

Apple immersive 3D camera

Apple just released “Submerged”, the first scripted short film shot entirely to be viewed with the Vision Pro. With the film, they released behind-the-scenes footage about the process that reveals the long-rumoured Apple 8K 3D camera which was used to shoot the production.

Apple’s development of a high-resolution (8K) stereoscopic camera dedicated to capturing spatial content for devices like the Vision Pro. This camera features two large sensors, likely in the Micro-Four-Thirds ,which is significant for achieving high-quality imagery with deep focus. This design aims to enhance immersive experiences by capturing spatial content that matches the human peripheral vision, which spans around 180 degrees.

For such a stereoscopic system, the use of large sensors would allow for more light to enter, improving image quality in low-light conditions and creating a natural depth-of-field, crucial for 3D effects. Deep focus refers to the technique where everything from the foreground to the background stays sharp, a key aspect for spatial content, especially in virtual or augmented reality settings.

Given the focus on human peripheral vision and wide-angle capture, the lighting design would need to be carefully integrated into setups. Practical lamps placed strategically, such as overhead lighting or diffused sources, would be essential to avoid harsh shadows or inconsistent lighting that could break the immersive illusion.

Apple seems to be pushing the boundaries of immersive media capture, making this development particularly interesting for filmmakers and content creators focusing on virtual reality and augmented reality.

This camera is not for sale at present.
